The beautiful scent of Rosemary to remind us .....
Look at this beautiful Rosemary plant that was donated to the school in memory of Margaret Hall Hamilton, by her dedicated 3rd grade students.
Margaret sadly passed away in December 2012, at the wonderful age of 94 - go girl! and she is buried in Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville. Margaret taught at Venable from 1947 to 1957, and developed some dedicated life long friends of her third grade. These include Billy Woods and Junius Fishburne - We would love to hear from these and any others who knew and loved her. Margaret's sister, Mary Pace (nee Hall) also taught at the school around the same time. So please any former students share with us your memories...... |
Thank you to Sharon Helt and Denise Patton Pace for providing us with information about Margaret.

Hola everybody - December 2012
Actually Olla - and pronounced Oya - but never mind! We were very fortunate to have a visit from Mark Williams of Dripping Springs. Mark very kindly worked with our garden club, giving us and helping us install two OLLAs in one of our vegetable beds. These are ingenious, ancient and simple watering tanks which are buried into the ground, filled with water and then slowly release the water to the roots of the surrounding plants. Made from terracotta, in Mexico, this watering system is ideally suited to our garden under plastic cover, making watering a much less arduous affair. Thank you Mark. These Ollas will be available from Southern States on Harris Street and if you want to know more about them here is a link to the website. DrippingSpringsOllas.com
Wear your PJ's to school (and in the garden) day
Pumpkins
Look at these incredible gorgeous pumpkins painted by kindergarteners in Ms Wolf's art class. The colors are enough to warm even the coldest day.
October 2012
Taking advantage of our warm Fall - the winter vegetables are off to a great start.
We love our benches.
September 2012 Thank you so much to Roberto Armengol who formed all the pieces and to his children who diligently sanded them down and of course the the TJ United way day of caring volunteers who erected them for us.
To the United Way's Day of Caring
September 2012:
A wonderful group of volunteers descended on our school wednesday morning and eagerly set about putting together our 4 benches alongside the vegetable gardens. They also moved plants and cleared weeds and debris from around the school. They were fantastic group of happy helpers - we shall forever be grateful to them - our garden looks so complete now. Pot luck picnic
What a lovely turn out for the Pot Luck picnic. And just in case you missed it amidst all those scrumptious dishes - here is the Venable's Vegetables own contribution of Coleslaw, made from the hearty growth of cabbages from the garden... With a little help of a few peppers, red onion, carrots, sour cream, vinegar and dijon mustard. Hope you enjoyed it - albeit unknowingly!
Welcome Back!
And what a welcome!
Summer 2012 - Science Explorers
Rising 3rd graders spend their days investigating at Science Explorers over the summer.
The garden is always full of surprises
The best thing about gardening is watching your hard work pay off, and observing nature doing 'it's thing' is always such a treat. BUT sometimes things don't always go according to plan. This year we planted some Sweet Peas, anticipating a mass of climbing sweet scented flowers to cover the trellis. Waiting and waiting we got one - one flower that is, albeit very beautiful, and no scent! Never mind we'll remember next year when we plan our garden and spend a winter wondering why. Still We have our gourds!
July 2012
Then and now.
